A Gambling addict stole £8,300 from the mental health charity he worked for to fund his betting addiction, city magistrates heard.
Terrence John Riggs, 54, dealt with expenses and petty cash at national charity Together Working For Well-Being, which has offices on King Street, Wakefield.
Riggs pleaded guilty to four thefts from the charity and asked for a further 171 similar offences to be taken into consideration.
In April it came to light that excessive expenses had been seemingly claimed by staff. But prosecutor Marie Austin-Walsh said there was no suggestion they were involved in anything Riggs had done. Riggs filled out their claim forms but doubled the amount. He handed over what had been actually claimed but kept the rest. Money also went from petty cash and the tea fund.
Riggs, of Wellington Road, Dudley, West Midlands, was arrested and made a full admission.
Mrs Austin-Walsh said: "He informed officers he had a gambling addiction and that was the reason he had been committing these offences"
Julie Allott, mitigating, said, Riggs went voluntarily to the police station when he realised the matter was to be investigated. The solicitor said Riggs had lost his job. He has acknowledged his problem with gambling and is attending a rehabilitation unit.
Magistrates committed the case to Leeds Crown Court.
