UK Government Finalising Regulations

The UK government is close to finalising the regulations that will allow each of the 16 places granted permission to run large casinos to select operators to run them.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport says local authorities should be in a position to start that process during the summer. However, one such authority, Leeds City Council, has said it did not envisage starting its selection procedure until later in the year.

Council bosses say they have established that a number of firms are interested in the licence for the Leeds complex. Three times the size of the current norm for a UK casino, it would boast up to 150 slot machines offering maximum jackpots of £4,000.

Places other than Leeds which have won government approval for the new generation casinos include Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton.
